OREANDA-NEWS. November 16, 2012. NLMK has signed a long-term contract with Vyksa Steel Works (VMZ) (part of OMK, the United Metallurgical Company) for the supply of continuously cast slabs. These slabs will be rolled into plates at  the VMZ Mill-5000 (MKS-5000) to be further used for the production of large-diameter pipes, including under Gazprom’s orders to expand the Unified Gas Supply System as part of the Bovanenkovo-Ukhta, Ukhta-Torzhok, and  Yuzhny Potok (Southern Stream) projects.  Orders placed by the United Metallurgical Company will require NLMK to produce slabs with superior internal steel structure standards, and in dimensions that have not been previously produced by Russian companies (355 mm thick, 2200 mm wide).

To ensure  the high quality standards applied to steel used for the production of large-diameter pipes, all steel intended for Vyksa Steel Works will be processed at our  highly efficient RH degasser, and ladle furnaces. Unique-diameter slabs will be cast by our Continuous Casting Machine #8 (CCM-8). These facilities were built and revamped as part of Stage II of our Technical Upgrade & Development Program 2010-2012  at Novolipetsk.

For reference:

Over the last few years, NLMK has significantly expanded its secondary metallurgy capacity through revamping and through commissioning new facilities. At Novolipetsk, there are currently four ladle furnaces with a total capacity of 12 mtpy; ten ladle metallurgy units; 2 RH degassers with a capacity of 400,000 tpy a Basic Oxygen Furnace  (BOF) Shop #1 and 4 mtpy in BOF Shop #2, commissioned in September 2011.

LF treatment will be used for low-carbon, carbon, low-alloyed, and electrical steels used in the automotive industry, construction, white-goods production, and power engineering.
