OREANDA-NEWS. November 28, 2012. PETRONAS is pleased to announce that the Gumusut-Kakap field, Malaysia’s second deepwater development, has achieved first oil production, reported the press-centre of PETRONAS.

This first production is achieved via an interim crude evacuation system (ICES) where two production wells from the Gumusut-Kakap field are tied back (linked) to the existing Kikeh field’s floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit. The production is expected to reach a maximum of 25,000 barrels per day (bpd) upon ramping up of the two wells.

The Gumusut-Kakap field is the second deepwater field development in Malaysia after the Kikeh field. The field’s full development system comprises 19 subsea wells tied back to a permanent structure of a semi-submersible floating production system (FPS) and an oil export pipeline that will bring the crude to the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) in Kimanis, Sabah.

The full development system will enable the crude production from Gumusut-Kakap to reach 120,000 bpd at its peak performance.

“The Gumusut-Kakap’s first oil production via the ICES is a tremendous achievement as the project was only initiated in August 2011. The team took about 14 months to complete the entire process from planning to execution to achieve the targeted first oil date,” said Encik Ramlan Abdul Malek, PETRONAS’ Vice President of Petroleum Management.

“Credit for this accelerated project and its achievement must go to the collaborative effort between PETRONAS, Sabah Shell Petroleum Co., Murphy Sabah Oil Co., Conoco Philips Sabah Ltd. and PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd,” added Encik Ramlan.

He said all parties involved in the project, including the Gumusut-Kakap production sharing contractors and the relevant service providers, be commended for their dedication and joint effort in overcoming the challenges of successfully completing the work and meeting the project’s objective with zero Lost Time Injury (LTI).

The Gumusut-Kakap field is operated by Sabah Shell Petroleum Co., partnering with Murphy Sabah Oil Co., Conoco Philips Sabah and PETRONAS Carigali. Kikeh, Malaysia’s first deepwater development is operated by Murphy Sabah Oil Co, in partnership with PETRONAS Carigali.
