OREANDA-NEWS. December 13, 2012. Vnukovo International Airport has signed an agreement with Jeppesen, a unit of Boeing Flight Services. This agreement stipulates an analysis to be done in order to determine the maximum capacity of Vnukovo and, then, recommendations on how to reach the maximum of takeoffs and landings with two dependent runways.

It is to be mentioned that within the framework of MAKS-2011Vnukovo International Airport and Boeing signed a memorandum of understanding aiming at cooperation to meet this goal.

Jeppesen is a leading global provider of media and information services and software for air, sea and land transportation partners. It has resources and trained and experienced staff which may be useful in the reorganization of ground operations at the airport in order to maximize the “throughput” (takeoffs and landings per hour). Jeppesen has previously worked with partners in Ireland, in the UK, in the UAE, in Iran, in Jordan, in Korea, in Egypt, in Panama, in Australia, in China and in South Africa, but for the first time in Russia.

The main goal that officials of Vnukovo international airport set up to Jeppesen is to maximize the amount of takeoffs and landings per hour in order to meet international standards when the reconstruction of the airport has been finished.

To achieve this goal, specialists of the company will analyze the existing ground infrastructure of the airport and possibilities for current and future development. They study all ground operations at Vnukovo, including aircraft parking positions, taxiways and taxi procedures prior to takeoffs and following landings and aircraft turn-around times. Jeppesen’s team will enhance the ground operational efficiency of the different departments of the airport and will examine its interaction with Moscow Air traffic control center.

Taking all airport factors into consideration, Jeppesen specialists will create a 3D model of the airport depicting all terminals, runways, aprons, taxiways, aircraft parking positions and other factors. Performance data for all aircraft types used at the airport and input of a representative busy air traffic schedule day will also be included in the model.

During this game-process this model will make visible current problem areas. As a result, the fast-time simulations developed by Jeppesen will allow for suggestions to be made to enhance efficiency and increase airport throughput.

“Working together with Vnukovo airport officials allows us to create a model and plan for enhancing ground-based operations for the airport and increase overall takeoffs and landings,” said Michael S. Lewis, vice president, Jeppesen Government and Industry Affairs. “This agreement provides an exciting opportunity to help modernize airport operations and bring Vnukovo air traffic levels up to desired standards.”

Six months later Jeppesen is to make two four-dimensional models - basic and final one’s, as well as recommendations how to change current problem areas. However, basic 3D model of Vnukovo Airport after reconstruction will be ready in a month.

Director General of JSC "Vnukovo" Vasily Alexandrov stated:

– Our ultimate goal is to increase throughput capacity at Vnukovo Airport and in Moscow air area in general. We have been working on this issue for a long time with Federal Air Transport Agency and Moscow Air traffic control center. But the U.S.A. and Europe have already had vast experience in this field and Jeppesen company, in particular. We would like that these achievements have been implemented in accordance with specialties of Vnukovo airport.

This requires, of course, technical measures to be introduced. Vnukovo makes many things on its own and it also works together with the Federal Air Transport Agency on the reconstruction of the airport, on building more high-speed taxiways, on introducing new high-tech equipment. Meanwhile, the Federal State Unitary Enterprise "State Research Institute of Civil Aviation" works on the modernization of air traffic control in the Moscow area.

Taking into consideration a vast international experience of Jeppesen company, I am sure that, we will be able to combine top materials and design available to achieve one goal – to increase throughput capacity, the capacity of Vnukovo airport, because we are a customer of these works. In turn, we will follow all the recommendations of Jeppesen as much as possible in order to put them into practice.

For more than 75 years Jeppesen has made it possible for pilots and their passengers to safely and efficiently reach their destinations. Today this pioneering spirit continues as Jeppesen delivers transformational information and optimization solutions to improve the efficiency of air, sea and rail operations around the globe. Jeppesen is a subsidiary of The Boeing Company. Jeppesen corporate information is available online at www.jeppesen.com.

Vnukovo International Airport is one of the largest air transportation hubs in Russia. Every year the airport serves more than 150 thousand flights of Russian and foreign airlines. Airport route map covers all the territory of Russia, the CIS countries, Western Europe, Asia and Africa.

Vnukovo airfield has two intersecting runways with the capacity 58 operations per hour.

Vnukovo-1 airport consists of two terminals: international passenger terminal B with the total area of 25 thousand square meters and a new passenger terminal A with the total area of 270 thousand square meters, 170 thousand square meters of which have been already put into operation. Second launch complex of terminal A will be opened in December 2012.
