OREANDA-NEWS. December 25, 2012. On 19 December 2012 Sakhalin Energy issued the so-called self declaration on adoption of the standard ISO 26000: 2010 Guidance on Social Responsibility.

This international standard summarises all aspects of corporate social responsibility and builds on the best practices available in this field. This standard provides the tools necessary to make an integrated assessment and diagnostics of the Company’s social responsibility performance.

The company’s self assessment process took more than eight months to complete. The process involved practically all Company departments. Based on self assessment results, a number of Sakhalin Energy’s internal guiding documents were amended or updated to ensure full compliance with the requirements of the new standard. It took the company a little more than a year to finalise this process.

Sakhalin Energy’s self declaration was issued at the extended meeting of the Committee of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RUIE) on Corporate Social Responsibility and Demographic Policy, themed “Responsible Corporate Practice Assessment Tools: Experience, Problems and Prospects”.

At the meeting, Sakhalin Energy shared its experience in implementing the self assessment and testing the recommendations on self assessment for companies issued by the RUIE on the basis of the ISO 26000: 2010 international standard.

As the next step, the company intends to perform such assessments of social responsibility performance on a regular basis. The plan is to perform such assessments three times a year.

The international standard ISO 26000:2010 Guidance on Social Responsibility became the first ISO standard in social responsibility. It provides universal guidance to all types of organisations in the private and government sector, based on the international agreement of experts representing principal stakeholder groups. This standard helps introduce best social responsibility practices around the world.

ISO 26000 does not contain requirements, but is a voluntarily adopted manual, and therefore is not a standard for certification.

ISO 26000 promotes common understanding of social responsibility and supplements other tools.
