OREANDA-NEWS. In 2012 enterprise history was made when Vyksa Steel Works (OJSC VSW, Nizhny Novgorod region, part of the United Metallurgical Company, CJSC OMK) achieved record railcar wheel production by producing 1.4 mln tonnes of various pipes and 850,000 railcar wheels.

Pipe production dropped by 19% in 2012 compared to 2011. Large pipe production dropped by 36% against 2011 and amounted to 656,000 tonnes. Railcar wheel production grew by over 14% compared to 2011.

“Pipe production results can be explained by the deferral of some large projects of Russian and foreign oil and gas companies. Decrease in pipe production was typical for the industry as a whole last year. Increase in railcar wheel production was achieved due to enhanced production efficiency and improved logistics. In 2013, the railcar wheel shop of VSW will turn 40. When the shop was put into operation in 1973, its design capacity was about 550,000 wheels per year. At present, we have achieved high production results due to an implemented strategy which aims to increase railcar wheel production, due to enhanced product quality and competency of our employees,” executive director of VSW Sergei Filippov commented on the enterprise’s production results.

Following the production results of December 2012, VSW produced 139,000 tonnes of pipes. The figure grew by almost 46% compared to December 2011. Large pipe production increased by 84% and amounted to about 66,000 tonnes. In December 2012, railcar wheel production increased by almost 10% against December 2011 and amounted to 75,000 wheels. The production growth in December 2012 is determined by terms of current orders.
