OREANDA-NEWS. Toshiba Corporation announced that the company has been invited by Fennovoima Oy, a Finnish nuclear power company, to enter into direct negotiations in respect of the construction of a 1,600MW class EU-ABWR (Advanced Boiling Water Reactor) for the Hanhikivi 1 nuclear power plant unit in Finland.

Fennovoima was granted political approval to construct a nuclear power plant, a Decision-in-Principle, by the Finnish government and parliament in July 2010. Another company, Teollisuuden Voima Oyj, was also granted a Decision-in-Principle at the same time.

Toshiba responded to invitations to tender by both companies by proposing its 1,600MW class Advanced Boiling Water Reactor for Fennovoima's Hanhikivi 1 and Teollisuuden Voima's Olkiluoto 4.

Separately, Fennovoima announced that it has decided to assess whether or not to proceed by constructing a medium sized plant at Hanhikivi 1. Whichever option is decided upon, the company said it expects to select the plant supplier during 2013.
