OREANDA-NEWS. The Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) participated in the ‘Clean up the Gulf Day’ on February 27 under its Corporate Social Responsibility program, and in keeping with its efforts to preserve the environment and help build a responsible attitude within the community.

The Clean up the Gulf Day was an initiative of the Gulf Petrochemical and Chemical Association (GPCA) and was observed in six Gulf cities under the theme. The participating member companies organized separate environmental awareness campaigns in Riyadh, Rabigh, Jubail, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Kuwait. The initiative was in line with the World Cleanliness Day marked in many countries around the world.

SABIC organized the event in Riyadh’s Al-Thumamah region. Volunteer employees and their children joined hands in cleaning the area and collecting the trash and dropping it in designated containers for recycling.

SABIC made the appropriate logistic arrangements at the site, providing transportation for the volunteers, and equipping the area with tents, hand washers and portable toilets. The campaign was held with support from the Riyadh Municipality, Riyadh Traffic Police and the Saudi Red Crescent.

While praising the GPCA initiative, Mohamed Al-Mady, SABIC Vice Chairman and CEO, said that the company’s participation in the Clean up the Gulf Day was a strong reflection of its community engagement, care for the environment, and commitment to sustainable business practices. The spontaneous response from SABIC employees to participate in the campaign demonstrated their understanding of the concept of volunteering and sustainability, which the company is seeking to further reinforce.

Al-Mady added that the company seeks to play an important role not only in minimizing its own environmental footprint, but also encouraging community involvement in environment-related issues such as climate change, scarcity of resources, and the importance of waste recycling. SABIC also encourages its employees, their families, and the local community to participate in efforts to mitigate environmental impact by participating in various environmental campaigns and programs.

At the end of the day’s events, SABIC honored the volunteering employees and presented honorary plaques to the participating governmental agencies – the Riyadh Municipality, Riyadh Traffic Police and the Saudi Red Crescent.
