OREANDA-NEWS. March 29, 2013. Online shopping for SEB’s clients will become even more secure as purchases from recognised merchants can from now on be confirmed by logging in to the Internet Bank.

This means that even when somebody has copied the bank card data, they cannot use it to make online purchases. First, SEB’s MasterCard cards will be integrated with the programme, with VISA cards to undergo the same at a later date.

“Online purchases are becoming increasingly popular and in the last six months alone the volume of transactions has increased 17 per-cent and the number of transactions has increased 25 per-cent. SEB’s secure development – client identification through the Internet Bank – decreases the chances of criminals copying bank card data and using it for felonious activities.

Clients are, with reason, sensitive regarding any changes made to e-channels because on the internet every situation that is out of the ordinary may mean falling victim to fraud. This is why we already informed our clients some time ago of the fact that as of today automatic card transactions over the internet will be done slightly differently,” explained Eerika Vaikmae-Koit, Member of the Management Board and Head of Retail Banking at SEB, when commenting on the change.

For our clients the implementation of the 3D Secure programme only involves one additional form of identification when paying at an online shop. When using online shops that have joined the programme, after the client has entered the bank card data, an additional window will open that asks the client to log in to SEB Internet Bank to confirm the payment. After a successful authentication, the purchase process will continue as per usual. The 3D Secure programme will make bank card fraud more difficult because in the future card data alone is of no use to criminals because to use the card online one will also have to know the Internet Bank passwords of the card owner.

Those online shops that have joined this security system will feature the MasterCard SecureCode logo. To date, all of Estonia’s online shops have joined the programme. If a merchant has not joined the 3D Secure programme, a customer will not be asked to identify herself/himself when buying from an online shop.
