OREANDA-NEWS. In April 2013 NCG launched a separate collection of wastes in Pulkovo 2 Terminal. Thus, Pulkovo became the first airport in Russia to implement the goal of reducing negative environmental impacts. The system in question provides for recycling 70% of airport wastes.

NCG as Pulkovo Airport operator is committed to decrease negative impacts of the airport on environment. Passenger traffic steadily grows, resulting is a waste increase.

Environmental group of Pulkovo Airport (NCG LLC) conducted research on waste processing and separate waste collection in public places, which bases on the data of Fraport as an international airport operator.

The pilot project of separate collection of wastes in Pulkovo 2 Terminal makes use of three different containers for "Paper, printed matter"; "Packaging" and "Other wastes". Thus, wastes are separated in the garbage bins at an early stage before they are dumped. Passengers can easily decide where to dispose of wastes by the container color, pictograms and info stands. Containers are by Glasdon, a British waste container manufacturer. Nexus garbage bins, which were purchased for separate collection of wastes at Pulkovo Airport are made of a composite 100% recycled material. Garbage bins have special trays for liquids, which is important for waste collection in pre-flight check areas where empty packaging is dumped.

Subsequently, separately collected wastes are transported to a waste processing plant where plastic, aluminium, glass and paper are automatically sorted for further recycling. Other types of wastes are processed into composted fertilizers and fuel that can be used in cement production.

Volker Wendefeuer , COO of NCG LLC:

"NCG LLC as Pulkovo Airport operator is committed to efficient environment protection. Separate collection of wastes will enable the airport, its passengers and visitors to effectively contribute to reduction of negative environment impacts. We would appreciate passengers to comply with the new procedure"
