OREANDA-NEWS. SABIC received the 2013 AICM Responsible Care® Merit Award for its exceptional initiatives in achieving long-term sustainability for its stakeholders and the communities in which it operates.

Li Lei, Vice President and Regional Head, North Asia, SABIC and Ali AlGarni, Vice President of Global EHSS and SABIC representative in RCLG attended and received the award conferred by organizations like Association of International Chemical Manufacturers (AICM) and the International Council for Chemical Associations (ICCA), which recognize the efforts of AICM member companies, which SABIC is a member of, in embedding and adopting Responsible Care® Guiding Principles throughout their operations.

Responsible Care®, a principle aspect of SABIC’s journey toward sustainability, is the chemical industry’s unique global initiative to drive continuous improvement in Environment, Health, Safety and Security (EHSS) performance, and to promote the development and application of sustainable chemistry.

Speaking at the awards ceremony in Beijing, Li Lei remarked “Sustainability development is a cornerstone of SABIC’s growth strategies and we are deeply committed to producing even greater outcomes in Responsible Care® globally and in China”.

“At SABIC, our innovative materials are the catalysts for the creation of newer and better products that address the world’s sustainability challenges. We continuously strive for innovation and operational excellence to powering the ambition of our stakeholders and we do this every day by taking a concerted effort in embedding responsible manufacturing and business practices in our day to day operation.”

Ali AlGarni added:” This achievement in China is aligned with SABIC’s long term strategy in becoming a Responsible Care® company in the globe, having been certified by third party in the Middle East, Africa, and the USA in 2011 and 2012. The appreciation goes to our employees and the leadership team for their support in embarking on this important journey.”

“Together with our employees and stakeholders, we are fully focused to supporting the cause to drive mutually beneficial contribution to social, economic, and environmental spheres of the sustainability agenda, aimed at creating win-win solutions for long-term growth,” concluded Li Lei.

As part of its initiatives for promoting environmental sustainability in China, SABIC partnered with academic institutions and Chinese government ministries, including the Ministries of Health, Environmental Protection, and Industry and Information Technology, in proposing best practices and standards for the chemical industry. In addition, all manufacturing leaders participate in an internal Responsible Care® awareness session on a half-yearly basis, where they are getting familiar with SABIC Environmental, Health, Safety and Security Standards (SHEMS) and application of Responsible Care® codes and principles in the SABIC’s EHSS management system.

In 2012, SABIC released its first Sustainability Report where it is the first multinational corporation to be awarded the China RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Certification for its sustainable electronics materials in China. The certification aims to control and reduce environmental pollution caused by waste from electronic information products, aimed at meeting customer demands for world-class, environmentally responsible materials.
