OREANDA-NEWS. Toyota Tsusho Corp. will acquire 4.9% of the outstanding shares in Indonesia's largest autoparts manufacturer, PT Astra Otoparts Tbk.

The deal, announced by the Toyota Motor Corp. group trading firm, is valued at around 886 billion Indonesian rupiah, or roughly 9.3 billion yen. It will mark Toyota Tsusho's first time investing in an overseas parts maker. The company will purchase the shares from parent PT Astra International Tbk.

Astra Otoparts handles the forging, casting and plastic molding of auto parts as well as making tires. The Indonesian giant supplies major Japanese carmakers and parts manufacturers, generating roughly 86.9 billion yen of sales in 2012.

Alongside Toyota's expanded auto production in Indonesia, Toyota Tsusho has built up a supply chain there and helped group parts makers set up local operations. The investment in Astra Otoparts springs out of its efforts in recent years to increase transactions outside the group.

Toyota Tsusho aims to tap demand from Japanese carmakers, which are beefing up their presence in Indonesia and working to source more parts locally.
