Reliance Infrastructure Limited (RInfra), the largest power distribution Company in Mumbai, is ready to handle the monsoon which could strike Mumbai possibly by the 2nd week of June 2013. To handle issues arising due to monsoon, RInfra has opened-up Central Disaster Control Room (CDCR) at its MIDC office, Andheri. The Company has been religiously setting up the Control Room since last 10 years for effective handling of monsoon exigencies.

The CDCR is fully equipped to handle any emergencies that may arise during monsoon season. CDCR will ensure seamless communication, coordination and resource mobilization among RInfra and other utilities, MCGM and various Govt. / Semi-Govt. Authorities. RInfra also established Hotline Communication facility between its Disaster Control Room and Control Room of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) to ensure better coordination.

RInfra’s monsoon action plan is a proactive consumer safety approach that will minimize down time during emergencies, save consumers from any fatalities and reduce consumer inconveniences. Company’s disaster management is equipped to handle critical situations that may crop-up due to water logging, power failures, electrical shocks, sparking, fire, etc.

In case, water logging becomes dangerous either at installations inside consumers’ premises like substations, meter cabins, etc., or at Company’s installation site such as transformers, mini pillars on roads, etc., for the safety of consumers RInfra may resort to ‘Safety Switch Offs’ in those affected area. The restoration of power supply and normalcy in such cases will only be done after a thorough inspection of each installation by RInfra officials.

RInfra’s proactive action plan also envisages stringent measures which are summarized below to overcome such eventualities and ensure its preparedness to meet exigencies arising during monsoon:

• Carried out all pre-monsoon checks and preventive maintenance of equipment's.

• Formed 32 dedicated Disaster Management Response Teams at Central as well as Divisional levels. These teams are equipped with modern wireless communication facilities like Hot lines, Radio Frequency Walkie - Talkie sets.

• Adequate stock of essential spare parts, tools and equipment's including transformers, switch- gears, etc., have been kept ready at various locations spread across the supply area which will be easily accessible to the divisional teams for use.

• Adequate transportation equipped with emergency repair kits, tools and safety wears are ready at all divisional offices and other different strategic locations.

• 2 special Motor Boats placed at strategic locations for any emergencies.

• Necessary medical, administrative and material support team and infrastructure are in place to meet any emergency.

RInfra also urges consumers to respond and support Company’s efforts in achieving total safety by meticulously following Do’s and Don’ts listed below:

Do’s:

1. Ensure that your building’s Meter Cabin is adequately protected from the water logging.

2. Get entire wiring in your premises thoroughly checked and tested by the Licensed Electrical Contractor.

3. Put off the main switch in case there is water logging or leakage observed in the meter cabin. Put on the main switch only on ensuring that all faults have been rectified properly.

4. In case sparking is noticed in Meter Cabins, Street Light Poles and Distribution Pillars and / or there is an electric shock through these installations, then in such matters please contact our Round O’clock Power Helpline number - 1800 200 3030.

Don’ts:

1. Do not touch any installations bare handed or without using hand gloves, safety shoes or insulated platform.

2. In case of sparking and/ or water leakages, do not touch Street Light Poles, Distribution Pillars, and Meters in Cabin or any such installations.

3. Do not use electricity more than the sanctioned load. This is especially applicable in case of the Temporary Connections.
