OREANDA-NEWS. Hydropower unit No. 20, where the hydraulic turbine was replaced, has been put into operation after its reconstruction at the Volzhskaya HPP (affiliate of RusHydro JSC). This is the last of the four turbines which has been reconstructed under a long-term contract concluded between RusHydro and Power Machines.

The new turbine has improved technical characteristics. After re-identification the rated capacity of the hydropower unit will increase from 115 to 125.5 MW. Power Machines OJSC has performed the design, manufacture, supply, testing, installation and construction works, as well as installation supervision and commissioning of hydroturbine No. 20.

The three previous turbines were reconstructed and put into operation in 2012 and 2013 within the framework of the first long-term contract between RusHydro and Power Machines.  In 2013 Power Machines started to fulfill the obligations under a second long-term contract. In the course of its implementation 10 turbines and 22 generators are to be replaced on the Volzhskaya HPP by 2021. By now Power Machines have replaced a total of 12 of the 22 hydroturbines at the Volzhskaya HPP.

The equipment renovation has been carried out in line with a Program for comprehensive upgrade implemented by RusHydro. The implementation of this Program at the Volzhskaya HPP will enable to significantly improve its equipment reliability and performance, as well as to raise the installed capacity above its design value (2541 MW) by 203.5 MW. As a result the installed capacity of the largest hydro power plant in Europe will grow up to 2744.5 MW by 2021.
