OREANDA-NEWS. Under the Action Plan for 2013 designed to increase the level of financial literacy among the Ukrainian population (hereinafter referred to as the Action Plan), the National Bank of Ukraine in close co-operation with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine runs basic courses in “Financial Literacy” and “Financial Education” at summer camps for children in all the regions of Ukraine.

The teachers, who participated in the pilot project “Financial Literacy” and volunteers from partner organizations, who have received special training and hands-on experience, are running summer courses designed for children and teenagers aged 9-16 in all the regions of Ukraine.

As part of the initiative to increase financial literacy among the Ukrainian population, the following projects are currently being implemented: a pilot project “Financial Literacy Course” for 10th grade students (implemented under the auspices of the FINREP), an optional course “Financial Education” for 7th and 8th grade students, All-Ukrainian Media Tour launched by the Independent Association of the Banks of Ukraine, and All-Ukrainian tour to introduce the Financial Literacy Course to be taught at schools.

The social events, in particular, All-Ukrainian Week of Financial Literacy and International Day of Savings in Ukraine, which are aimed at increasing financial literacy among the general population, will be held by the end of the year. Financial sector institutions, local authorities, public institutions, media agencies will be involved in this project.

It is noteworthy to mention that the National Bank of Ukraine approved the Action Plan developed as part of the Strategy for Reform of Consumer Protection System in Financial Services Markets for 2012-2017.

The Action Plan envisages that a number of large-scale educational projects targeting different social groups will be implemented under the auspices of partners of the National Bank of Ukraine - industrial associations, government authorities and international organizations. In particular, the National Bank of Ukraine cooperates closely with the Independent Association of the Banks of Ukraine, representatives of the Financial Sector Development Program (USAID/ FINREP-II) and public initiative “National Network of Financial Education”

The Action Plan is follow-up work of what the National Bank of Ukraine embarked on in previous years. “The National Bank of Ukraine is currently developing long-term Strategy to increase financial literacy among the Ukrainian population which sets out the priorities and determines areas of activities for public and non-government organizations in this sphere. Financial literacy will help everyone navigate their way through today's complicated financial world with its numerous offers and make sound decisions regarding spending and savings, family budget planning, and business. The state is committed to implementing projects to increase financial literacy among the Ukrainian population as a well-educated person equipped with financial knowledge and skills is instrumental in building a strong country,” noted Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine Valerii Prokhorenko.
