OREANDA-NEWS. August 26, 2013. Montchegorsk Refinery of Kola MMC (subsidiary of Norilsk Nickel) puts in projected operation gas introduction unit (GIU) in the H2SO4 section.  The Company invested more than RUB 20 million into the project.

GIU is a component of the gas-duct totally refurbished in 2012, that distributes the sulfurous gas torrents coming out of the boiling layer furnaces. Serving both as collector and distributor, the unit facilitates considerably the gas input to the H2SO4 section, especially at the transition stage from one system of sulfuric acid production to the other.

In particular, the gas introduction unit guarantees a more economic technological operation regime without production stoppage.

A three months monitoring of experimental operation convinced the refinery engineers in an increased gas capture and in its elevated concentration in the H2SO4 section.  The GIU boosted 10 degrees the temperature of gases transported to the H2SO4 section from the refinery. The new temperature regime minimizes eventual corrosion and gas-duct leakages, which reduces the number of scheduled repairs and technological cleans-up comprehending manual excavations of more than 100 tons of dust at a time.
