OREANDA-NEWS. NPO Saturn, part of the UEC MC and Nanotechnological Composite Center Ltd., part of the Composite holding are to create a joint venture which will consolidate the breakthrough technologies in the field of research and production of gas turbine engine components made of polymer composite materials.

Today, at the MAKS-2013 NPO Saturn Research and Production Association OJSC and Nanotechnological Composite Center Ltd. signed a Memorandum of understanding aimed at creating a joint venture on the premises of the former. The main activity of the new company will be focused on the research and development dedicated to the studies of development of gas turbine engine components made of polymer composite materials as well as running of laboratory material studies and small-batch production of gas turbine engine components made of polymer composites. The Agreement was signed by Yuriy Shmotin, NPO Saturn head of design and Mikhail Stolyarov, general manager of Nanotechnological Composite Center Ltd.

According to Yuriy Shmotin, “technological innovations behind the creation of the joint venture in question are in the development and application of new techniques of reinforcement and forming of parts which have no Russian analogs. Coupled with the work on creation of new computation and design methodologies for the highly-loaded gas turbine engine components historically performed by NPO Saturn, this partnership will allow us to reach the level of the world’s leading manufacturers”.

“The foundation of a joint venture will allow to accelerate the process of the introduction of composite materials into the production of the NPO Saturn gas turbine engines. It is very important to us that Nanotechnological Composite Center Ltd. is part of this exciting project. We are confident that the newly created company has a lot of future,” - emphasized Mr. Stolyarov.

The creation of a joint venture is part of a large-scale project of introducing polymer composite materials into the design of the NPO Saturn engines. Numerous Russian higher-learning institutions, small innovation enterprises, engineering companies, the industry’s institutes and material original manufactures are involved in the project realization. The introduction of polymer composites into the design of the NPO Saturn-manufactured engines especially for the purposes of upgrading the SaM146 engines powering Sukhoi Superjet 100 will allow to ascend to a new level of development and considerably enhance the competitive edge of the Company’s products.

The joint venture will emerge as part of the development program of the “Gas turbine engineering and power machine building” innovation territorial cluster which is being established in Yaroslavl region.

NPO Saturn Research and Production Association (OJSC) is an engine-building company specialized in the design and development, production and after-market support of gas turbine engines for military and civil aviation, Navy boats and power-generating plants and gas-pumping units. NPO Saturn is part of United Engine Corporation.

Nanotechnological Composite Center Ltd. (NCC) is an organization created in accordance with the Program on creation of nanotechnological centers of the Fund for infrastructural and training programs. The NCC’s purpose of activity is to create commercially viable R&D projects seeking to introduce polymer composite materials into the industry under a partnership and co-financing mode.
