OREANDA-NEWS. The dredging operations in the port of Sabetta began with the opening of the summer navigation season. During one month of work, from early August to early September, special vessels removed a total of over 5 million cubic meters of dirt from the sea floor, which is one half of the target amount. The dredging operations will go on until the end of the summer navigation season. According to the schedule, about 10 million cubic meters of dirt will be removed and hauled away before October 15.

The special vessels are used to build a four-kilometers-long port of Sabetta approach channel and to provide a berthing area. The dredging work is done by milling dredgers, holding dredges and also by excavators installed on a pontoon in the port water area. The fleet of Jan De Nul NV, a Dutch company, which is used for port construction in the Gulf of Ob, consists of 17 vessels including support vessels.

The dredging operations at the northern shore of the Gulf of Ob in the Yamal District of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area, Tyumen Region, are part of an arctic port of Sabetta construction project designed for LNG transportation and for supporting the year-round navigation along the Northern Sea Route.
