OREANDA-NEWS. September 19, 2013. This is stipulated by the draft fiscal and customs policies for 2014, developed by the Finance Ministry and pending for consideration of the Cabinet.

The amendments to be introduced in the Tax Code, the Ministry informs, are designed to harmonize a structure of excisable commodities provided for by the national legislation with that stipulated by the European one, because in line with international practices, jewellery is not levied any excises on.

The elimination of the jewellery excise is expected to raise its legal import and, as a result, to increase VAT, customs duties and customs fees collection to the budget. At present, an amount of the jewellery excise depends on a weight of a jewellery item, but not on its customs value. For example, the silver jewellery is levied MDL 2.1 lei per gramme, the item made of other precious metals is levied on MDL 32 per gramme.
