OREANDA-NEWS. The key goal of upgrading and technical retrofitting of power unit No. 8 of DTEK Dobrotvor TPP is to increase the capacity of the power unit from 150 to 160 MW, extend its service life by 15 years, improve the technical and economic performance of the equipment, and reduce solid emissions to 50mg/m2 to meet the European standards. The reconstruction of power unit No. 8 will cost UAH 585 million in total.

As power unit No. 8 was commissioned in July 1964 some equipment pieces exhausted their capacity and needed to be replaced. On 15 November 2012, DTEK decided to shut down the power unit due to poor operation of the equipment.

The reconstruction project involves the upgrade of boiler units, a turbine, a turbine generator, electrical components of the power unit, surveillance and control systems, and installation of electric filters.

DTEK is equipping power unit No. 8 with new electric filters designed by the Ukraine-based company Tekhenergo to secure air protection. In addition, the company has replaced smoke exhausters and gas-outlet flues. The upgraded power supply of electric filters and the exhaust gas monitoring system control flue gas emissions under the European standards. New electric filters will exhibit better environmental performance to 50 mg/m? in terms of solid emissions, which will drop by 21 times against the emissions before installation. This will be the largest project in the environmental programme for DTEK Dobrotvor TPP and will cost UAH 82.8 million.

“In 2012-2013, DTEK Dobrotvor TPP exported 1,555 TWh of electricity to Poland using 836,000 of coal produced in Ukraine. In the nine months of 2013, the plant received around 722,000 tonnes of coal from our supplier, the state-run company Ugol Ukrainy [Coal of Ukraine], 72.3% of which came from the Lvov-Volyn coal basin. Over 2012-2013 DTEK has invested UAH 492 million in the development and upgrade of the plant to ensure stable exports of electricity abroad and provide demand for Ukrainian coal.

DTEK approaches environmental issues responsibly, so new filters will help us on the way to European environmental standards for dust emissions. The upgrade will improve the flexibility and efficiency of power unit No. 8, ensure stability of its operations, and the energy network will have more opportunities for expanding the electricity exports and covering Ukrainian needs,” said Director of DTEK Dobrotvor TPP Andrey Shuvar.
