OREANDA-NEWS. TENEX has dispatched to the United States its last shipment of low-enriched uranium (LEU) obtained by downblending 500 tons of highly-enriched uranium from dismantled nuclear warheads.

In the presence of representatives from Russian and US government authorities and Russian and foreign businesses that have been involved in carrying out the HEU-LEU Programme, the final consignment of Russian LEU departed on Thursday, 14 November, from the Port of Saint Petersburg towards the US port of Baltimore, to be further used as fuel by US nuclear power stations.

This means the fulfilment by TENEX of its obligations under the contract with USEC signed on 14 January 1994 in pursuance of the Russia-US intergovernmental agreement on the use of HEU from nuclear weapons, dated 18 February 1993. A joint statement to this effect by the companies is included below.

The celebration featured a panel discussion where attendees talked about various topics related to the preparation and implementation of the HEU-LEU Programme, its meaning in the context of nuclear disarmament and the development of Russia-US cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, as well as answered questions from representatives of the Russian and foreign media.
