OREANDA-NEWS. Seeking to integrate with international scientific research institutions, Vale participated in the 6th World Science Forum last week, which took place in Rio de Janeiro. The theme chosen for this year was ‘Science for Global Sustainable Development.

This theme was chosen in order to renew the global commitments made during the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), held in Rio in 2012. Sustainable development that promotes economic growth is one of these commitments, preserving our planet’s resources for current and future generations.

The event was hosted and organized by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences in partnership with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), among other institutions. This is the first time that the forum has been hosted outside of Europe.

The director of Technology and Innovation and of the Vale Institute of Technology (ITV), Luiz Mello, represented Vale during the session dedicated to Science for Natural Resources, which approached the different dimensions associated with the use of natural resources. He talked about the importance of science in this process. “Science and technology are the basis for the creation of natural resources. These resources are created through man’s capacity to invent the technology required to access them. Without the necessary technology we would have no access to these resources, and they would never even become resources,” he explained.
