OREANDA-NEWS. January 22, 2014. The National Science and Technology Award Conference was convened at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

At this meeting, the R&D Project on Key Technologies for Manufacturing & Application of High-performance Fiber Composite Materials for Civil Works, which was undertaken by MCC Group Central Research Institute of Building & Construction (CRIBC) as the leading party, won the Second-Class National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology.

This project was completed jointly by six parties, including Tsinghua University and Southeast University. Thanks to the joint efforts in industry-university-research cooperation during the past over ten years, the six parties achieved breakthrough on ten key technologies, accomplished the worldwide most completed FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) technical system for civil works, and realized industrialization in this field.

The scientific and technological achievements include: (i) five categories of FRP products, which can replace the imported products and be exported in large volume; (ii) three series (six types) of specific equipment, about 25% of which are exported to the Europe, USA and Japan; and (iii) four types of fixing technologies for the current structures and five new structural systems for FRP. These achievements have been put into application in more than 3,000 items of domestic and foreign important buildings, bridges, as well as emergency rescue and disaster relief works.

Up to now, these achievements have been put into utilization in key works such as the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, the Military Museum in Beijing, Overpass along Beijing-Shenyang Expressway, Jiangyin Yangtze River Highway Bridge, Subway Tunnel in Beijing and Cooling Tower of Anyang Power Plant. In addition, these achievements have contributed to the technical advancement and development of the two industries of composite material and civil works. On this ground, China has turned out to be the country witnessing the fastest growth, the largest amount and the widest scope of FRP application in civil works in the whole world, and realized the leap-forward development of FRP industry in civil works.

FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) is a new kind of structural material for civil works, which is featured by light weight, high strength, corrosion resistance and suitable for design. It will greatly enhance the performance of the civil works structures and prolong their service lives.
