OREANDA-NEWS. February 07, 2014. During the curent year it is planned to build up to 0.7 km of the new Beskyd double track railwaytunnel. Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Volodymyr Kozak informed during a briefing at the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

“Construction activities of Beskyd tunnel are going on. Preparation works have finished and drilling commenced. And in 2014 we are planning to pass up to 0.7 kilometers,” Volodymyr Kozak said. 

In whole construction of the object is envisaged to finalize in 2016. The Minister stressed that on completion of the construction the capacity of the tunnel will have grown from 47 to 100 pairs of trains. The speed of passing the tunnel will also grow from approximately 40 to 80 km per hour.
 
It should be noted for Ukraine Beskyd tunnel is of a strategic importance as along the route of its location the cargoes are transported to the western border of the country and over 40% of transit cargoes in the direction of western and central Europe as well. The Government pays constant attention to this construction. The Vice Prime Minister Olexandr Vilkul underlines again and again that the new Beskyd tunnel will significantly improve logistic opportunities of Ukraine, their transit competitiveness and become one of the key chains of international transport corridors that pass along our country. 

Beskyd tunnel was built in the times Austrian-Hungarian empire in 1886 and appears a barrier place of the V Crete International transport corridor as it is the only single track section along the whole its length which reduces eth capacity of the section and the whole transport corridor. 

Eth new tunnel will be built on the distance of 30 meters to the left of the acting one. The artificial construction in 1764.5 m long will be situated 182 meters deep from the surface of Beskyd ridge (781-807 meters above the sea level). The contractor for the designing and building of the Beskyd tunnel was chosen the Builders’ Association Interbudmontazh private enterprise. The new Austrian tunneling method is selected for works.
