OREANDA-NEWS. Denver International Airport's (DIA) passenger traffic in January 2014 was a record-breaking month with 4,056,858 passengers, a 0.8 percent increase over the airport's travelers in January 2013. This is the second consecutive record-breaking month for DIA. The airport ended 2013 by setting a record for the busiest December in its 19-year history.

International passenger traffic continued its year-over-year growth due to service additions by United from DIA to Tokyo, Japan (NRT) and Fort McMurray, Canada (YMM), as well as strong passenger growth on Lufthansa's nonstop to Frankfurt, Germany (FRA). Passengers traveling onboard international flights increased by more than 21 percent in January 2014 compared to January 2013.

“This January, Denver International Airport saw very strong origin and destination traffic from each of our major carriers: United, Southwest and Frontier, indicating that there were large numbers of people traveling to and from Denver,” said Denver's Manager of Aviation, Kim Day. “When the airport sees record-breaking increases in passenger traffic, this translates to a positive economic outlook for the entire Rocky Mountain region and indicates that we are off to a strong and successful 2014.”

Additionally, mail, freight and express cargo operations saw a 9 percent decrease in January over the previous year. To date, 39,965,311 pounds of cargo have been handled at DIA in 2014, down from 44,010,519 pounds of cargo handled during the same time in 2013.
