OREANDA-NEWS. Representatives of 15 countries gathered in a workshop at the Vale Nature Reserve in Linhares, Espirito Santo, to discuss global targets for protecting biodiversity, known as Aichi Biodiversity Targets. The event is an initiative of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), a forum of the United Nations and one of the most important international instruments relating to the environment.

Vale's area, one of Brazil's largest conservation areas of Atlantic Forest, was chosen by the Ministry of Environment to host the event for its work in gathering elements, such as with its nursery and its knowledge in the production of saplings of native species, experiments with forest restoration and scientific collections.

At the workshop, strategies and action plans were drawn up. The Aichi Biodiversity Targets are global targets for protecting biodiversity adopted at the Convention of the Parties (COP 10), which brought together the signatory countries of the CBD. The meeting took place in 2010 in Nagoya, Japan, and approved a strategic plan of targets that has five objectives and 20 global goals to be achieved by 2020 by each of the participating countries. During the event, countries also presented the fulfillment status of the goals up until that date.
