OREANDA-NEWS. May 08, 2014. The consortium won the contract for the rehabilitation, the press service of the Millennium Challenge Account Moldova informs.

To rehabilitate the irrigation system Compact has provided about USD 13 million. The construction works are expected to start this summer and complete by July 2015. The consortium of the Romanian companies is to build new pumping stations, equipping them with 20 pumps; to install modern electro-mechanical equipment at already existent ones; reconstruct the stations’ premises; install new water gauges; build two drainage stations, etc.

When rehabilitated, the Chiracni-Zirnesti station will provide with water over 2,200 hectares of agricultural lands. The winning companies will also rehabilitate the drains that stretch on an area of more than 4,600 hectares.

The Chircani – Zirnesti system will become the 10th system to be rehabilitated under the Compact program. MCA Moldova has already signed contracts amounting to about 80 million USD for the rehabilitation of 10 irrigation systems (6 on the Dniester River - Criuleni, Lopatna, Jora de Jos, Puhaceni, Roscani and Cosnita, and 4 on the Prut River - Blinde?ti, Groze?ti, Leova and Chircani-Zirne?ti).

As it was said earlier, rehabilitation of irrigation systems of Moldova is one of the objectives of the Compact program, signed at the beginning of 2010 by the government of Moldova on the one hand and the Millennium Challenge Corporation on behalf of the USA government on the other one with the budget of USD262 million. The final goal of the project is to rehabilitate at least 11 irrigation stations in Moldova to irrigate 15,000 hectares.
