OREANDA-NEWS. June 03, 2014. The utility Vattenfall has selected AREVA to supply fuel assemblies for four of its seven reactors in Sweden.

The contract for four years' supply covers the period 2016-2020 and includes services associated with the fuel supply. AREVA will manufacture the assemblies in Germany, at its plant in Lingen.

Through this cooperation, Vattenfall is securing a significant portion of its nuclear fuel supply over the long term. "By choosing AREVA as a main supplier, Vattenfall confirms the confidence it places in our products and services, for the supply of boiling water reactors (BWRs) and pressurized water reactors (PWRs)," said Stefan vom Scheidt, CEO of AREVA in Germany.

In parallel, with a view to meeting its future fuel needs, Vattenfall is pushing ahead at the Swedish Ringhals power plant with irradiation of GAIA lead prototype fuel assemblies, a new fuel design developed by AREVA for PWRs.
