OREANDA-NEWS.  The Board of Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) today announced the appointment of Fred Lam Tin-fuk as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), succeeding the incumbent Mr Stanley Hui Hon-chung. Unanimously endorsed by the AA Board and approved by the Chief Executive of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the appointment will be effective 1 October, 2014 for a term of three years.

During the transitional phase after Mr Hui departs in mid-July and before Mr Lam assumes the role, C K Ng, currently Executive Director, Airport Operations, will oversee the AA in the capacity of acting Chief Executive Officer.

Welcoming Mr Lam to the AA team, Mr Vincent Lo Hong-sui, Chairman of the AA, said, "As we are facing the imminent saturation of the two-runway system, and undertaking the critical tasks of planning and building the three-runway system and the North Commercial District, the AA needs to equip itself to tackle these challenges. This is an important moment in HKIA’s development, and Mr Lam is the right leader to champion our plans and initiatives that will keep the airport competitive well into the future.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Hui for his contributions as the AA's CEO, and for driving HKIA's growth and development during a tenure that spanned the last seven years. Over this time, HKIA's air traffic volumes and the AA's financial performance achieved new heights year after year.

"Upon Mr Hui's departure, the Board will continue to provide all the necessary guidance and support to the management team under Mr Ng as acting CEO, in order to ensure a smooth transition to Mr Lam's leadership later in the year."

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Lam said, "I am very excited to be joining the AA team at this critical point in HKIA's development. I also look forward to working closely with Mr Ng and other AA colleagues to deliver the best service and facilities to the airport’s users. I am sure that together, we will be able to sustain HKIA’s success story for many years to come."

By assuming the CEO role, Mr Lam will be leading the AA's management team and overseeing the operations of HKIA and its related infrastructure. He will be responsible for defining the strategic priorities that will enhance the airport's contribution to Hong Kong, and maintain its long-term competitiveness and sustainability. He is also tasked with ensuring that the AA conducts its business according to prudent commercial principles, and that HKIA operates with maximum efficiency, complies with the strictest safety and security standards, and strives to be the world’s greenest airport.

Expressing confidence in Mr Lam's leadership, Mr Lo said, "Mr Lam's rich experience serving and managing a statutory body of the scale and complexity of the Trade Development Council over the past 28 years is very valuable to the AA. His extensive connections with local and overseas business communities as well as a wide spectrum of stakeholder groups will provide added strength to the AA team as it drives the development of HKIA’s world-class service and strategic projects.”

Mr Lo added that Mr Lam and the AA team face a daunting task of ensuring that the organisation is well placed not only to operate an efficient airport, but also to meet future growth needs and challenges.

He said, "In recent years, HKIA has been facing competition from other airports in the region that are aggressively expanding their facilities and services. Hong Kong cannot afford to be lagging behind. HKIA is a highly strategic asset for Hong Kong, and it must be allowed to continue to thrive and grow as the top aviation hub in the region.

"Therefore, we will dedicate additional resources to pursuing pivotal expansion plans, which include the three-runway system and the North Commercial District. In doing so, we must ensure that the AA's management team can rise to future challenges as we implement these extensive development projects. The Board as a whole will be taking a more proactive role in guiding and supporting the management team, and we will all work together as a team to enable HKIA’s continued success."
