OREANDA-NEWS. June 19, 2014. The claims handling statistics of SEB Elu- ja pensionikindlustus indicate that more than 60 per cent of accidents involving children under 18 are traumas sustained at home, which may keep parents away from work, caring for a child.

“Falling out a of a tree, slipping on stairs, running into something or colliding with a playmate may end up with the child sustaining a contusion to the leg or arm, or an injury or fracture, which takes a month to heal on average. However, in the event of more serious accidents treatment may take several months. An accident may cause a sizable shortfall in the income of a parent providing his or her child with medical care at home during this time,” said Indrek Holst, Chairman of the Management Board, SEB Elu- ja Pensionikindlustus.

According to data available to SEB Elu- ja pensionikindlustus, the mean insurance payout in the event of an accident involving children is approximately 200 euros, which a parent may use to purchase medicines for his or her child or to make up any shortfall in his or her income. The amount of an insurance payout largely depends on the insured sum.

About half of the accidents involving children occur during the three summer months. Typical summertime accidents involving children happen on trampolines, various methods of transport (bicycles, skateboards, roller skates or ATVs), lawn tractors or mowers, or whilst playing sports.
This year, 44 accidents involving children have been registered by SEB Elu- ja pensionikindlustus. About half of the accidents with children occur during the three summer months. Last year, SEB Elu- ja pensionikindlustus registered a total of 136 accidents involving children, with approximately 25 000 euros disbursed to parents in benefits.
