OREANDA-NEWS. July 09, 2014. Incheon International Airport Corporation announced on the 24th that its accumulated international cargo volume has exceeded 30 million tons. Recording an average annual growth of about 6.2% since the airport’s opening, Incheon Airport’s accumulated cargo volume reached 10 million tons on June 15, 2006, 20 million tons on July 2, 2010, and 30 million tons this year, only 13 years since the establishment of the airport.

Although Incheon Airport suffered stagnation in cargo volume for three years since 2011 due to the global recession and the trend of lightweight cargos, its cargo volume took an upward turn in 2013 when it recorded 2.46 million tons, a 0.3% increase from the previous year, thanks to its efforts including finding new cargo demand and conducting marketing activities. As of May this year, cargo volume has increased 4.5% from the same period last year.

Incheon Airport is Korea’s economic gateway, taking up 98% of the country’s cargo volume, 22.1% of its trade volume, and more than half of its trade surplus at 53.6% (as of 2013). Since its opening, Incheon Airport has moved together with Korea’s economic growth.
