OREANDA-NEWS. National Grid's proposals for a Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) pipeline in the Yorkshire & Humber region have been accepted for examination by the Planning Inspectorate, the Government body responsible for determining major planning applications. From 28 July, members of the public will be able to formally register their interest in the project as it moves to the next stage of assessment.

Local residents have already had their say on the project through the rounds of public consolations National Grid have carried out since 2011. Now, at this next stage of the planning process, members of the public and other interested parties will be able to register and formally submit their views to the Planning Inspectorate at: http://infrastructure.planningportal.gov.uk/projects/yorkshire-and-the-humber/yorkshire-and-humber-ccs-cross-country-pipeline/?ipcsection=overview.

The Planning Inspectorate can be contacted on 0303 4445000.

Russell Cooper, technical services manager at National Grid, said “This milestone is hugely important for National Grid's CCS project and we are delighted that PINS has accepted our application to take this project forward to the examination stage.

“This project has the potential to be a UK first and will put the Yorkshire and Humber area at the forefront of global CCS technology. If approved we are talking about innovative engineering which will capture up to 90% of the carbon dioxide produced by fossil fuel power stations and other heavy industry in the region.”

If approved works could commence from 2016.
