OREANDA-NEWS. September 15, 2014. TDK Corporation presents two EPCOS front-end modules for satellite navigation systems that enable the coexistence of cellular, WLAN, Bluetooth and satellite navigation services on the same antenna.

The new EPCOS R159 and D5107 front-end modules are best-in-class extractors with high linearity and compact dimensions, and thus effectively prevent harmonic effects from impairing GPS performance in smartphones.

The new EPCOS R159 front-end module is a fully integrated front-end solution that enables the cellular receiver to share the cellular diversity antenna with the receiver for GPS and GLONASS (1575 MHz to 1605 MHz). The new module combines an LNA and a low-loss SAW extractor for GPS and GLONASS in single 2.5 mm x 2.5 mm x 0.8 mm package. Thanks to the integrated matching and linearity enhancement circuits, no further external components are required.

The EPCOS D5107 front-end module supports full coexistence of cellular services with GPS, GLONASS and BeiDou, the Chinese satellite navigation service. The module combines a best-in-class SAW bandpass filter for GPS, GLONASS and BeiDou, matching and linearity enhancing circuits, and an LNA with a very low noise figure and supply current. It is thus able to prevent interference from the harmonics of the lowband cellular signal at around 830 MHz and the intermodulation products of the WLAN signal at 2400 MHz to 2483 MHz. This module measures in at a compact 2.5 mm x 2.5 mm x 0.8 mm.

The module package of the D5107 is covered with a metal plating, which protects the GPS receive path from interference by spurious signals (received via air interface) into the GPS receiver chain. Because of its full shielding, the D5107 is able to offer optimum sensitivity of the GPS receive path to signals that are at thermal noise level.
