OREANDA-NEWS. SSE has this week been promoting the Peterhead Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project at an exhibition in Brussels.

"The Future is Electric", organised by Eurelectric, brings together some of the most innovative energy projects in Europe, showcasing the innovative work that companies like SSE are involved with.

As the world's first full-scale gas CCS project, Peterhead would be a genuinely transformational project. It is in line to be one of two demonstration projects in the UK being funded by the Department for Energy and Climate Change thorough its CCS Commercialisation Competition.

Once developed the project will capture CO2 from the plant and then condense, transport and store it 100km offshore at a depleted gas reservoir owned by Shell. Over the project's 10 year lifetime it is expected to capture and store up to 10 million tonnes of carbon.

This demonstration project at our Peterhead plant will be vital to demonstrating the long-term viability of CCS and its role in decarbonising electricity production in the UK. SSE is committed to working with Shell to make this project a success.
