OREANDA-NEWS. September 17, 2014. Pilot testing of the new smelter flue gas cleaning system (bag filter) is currently underway at Kola MMC (subsidiary of Norilsk Nickel) refining shop.

The new unit replaces four obsolete electrostatic precipitators (ESP). Recovery rates of the old filters amounted only to 85%, which resulted in considerable loss of non-ferrous metals. New bag filter, on the other hand, captures up to 99% of the solid particles in flue gas. Such particles include large amounts of nickel, copper and cobalt, which can subsequently be recirculated. According to the Norilsk Nickel’s specialists, the new unit will reduce corresponding non-ferrous metal loses by over 110 tons per annum.

Installation of the new bag filer in place of ESPs will materially reduce power consumption as well as repair and maintenance costs, directly affecting Kola MMC’s cost of production.
Project cost will total approximately RUB 87 million (VAT excluded).
