OREANDA-NEWS. September 23, 2014. After a Europe-wide competition, the European Society for Vascular Surgery awarded its 20,400-euro research grant for research in vascular surgery to the vascular surgeon and Senior Research Fellow in Medical Biochemistry of the UT Jaak Kals.

Kals’s research is related to the studies of contrast-induced nephropathy. “If a person is given contrast agent during vascular studies, it inevitably damages kidneys. The objective of the study is to learn which systematic effect does the administration of the contrast agent have on the person,” said Kals. The study will take two years.

The European Society for Vascular Surgery awards research grants once a year. According to Mihkel Zilmer, Professor of Medical Biochemistry of the University of Tartu, the awarding of the grant is a great recognition of the contribution of his young colleague in the field of translational medicine within the research at the Institute of Biomedicine and Translational Medicine, the Endothelium Centre  (the Department of Cardiology and the Department of Biochemistry of the Institute of Biomedicine and Translational Medicine) and the Department of Surgery.
