OREANDA-NEWS. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNTAD) invited a number of leading personalities to share its vision of sustainable development in the fourth edition of its "Beyond Rio+20: Moving Forward to a Sustainable Future" magazine. Vania Somavilla, Executive Director of Human Resources, Health and Safety, Sustainability and Energy, was among the contributors. In her article, Vania emphasizes the mining sector's role in sustainable development and highlights initiatives that produce benefits at local level, such as those involving the communities, civil society, government and investors.

The purpose of "Beyond Rio+20: Moving Forward to a Sustainable Future" is to assist governments and its target audience to better navigate the subject of sustainable development. The material is also intended to contribute to the definition of a scope of work capable of having a greater impact on the eradication of poverty throughout the world and on the conservation of the environment. Mining has an important role to play in this scenario, as it can contribute to sustainable development in the regions in which it operates by acting in a responsible manner.

The opportunity to share its best practices and its vision of sustainable mining is very important to Vale. The invitation to participate in this publication can be attributed to its proximity with UNCTAD's mission and its international reputation as a responsible mining company.
