OREANDA-NEWS. October 22, 2014. The state-owned rail passenger service provider unveiled new prices set to be implemented starting on November 15, with management saying the average ticket price will rise 7-8 percent.

“Ticket prices for long distance routes will increase more, while shorter trips, lasting a few stations, will see a smaller hike, or no price hike at all,” said Elron CEO Andrus Ossip.

A ticket from Tallinn to Tartu will set you back 10 euros from mid-November, instead of the current 8.90, while a ticket on the Tallinn-Narva line will increase by one euro to 10.90.

First class tickets will not be effected, except for on the Tallinn-Tartu express line.

The reason for the hike was that Elron had increased frequency of departures to meet public demand, Ossip said.

The second reason for the increase is the drop in rail cargo volumes, which have decreased by more than 20 percent in the past year. Cargo transport has subsidized passenger travel on Estonia's railroads in the past, although that situation is changing as fewer goods are transported to Europe from Russia.

Ossip said that two-thirds of passengers currently do not use opportunities for discounts, which could save them 10 percent.
