OREANDA-NEWS. October 22, 2014. The 35-hour nationwide strike by Vereinigung Cockpit pilot's union in response to Lufthansa's plan to change its retirement benefits scheme, also affects services to and from Tallinn Lennart Meri Airport.

Among the cancelled flights are those between Tallinn and Frankfurt.

Lufthansa has said that it is doing its utmost to minimize the disruptions. The flights of sister Lufthansa Group carriers will operate normally during the strike period.

The strike is the latest in a series of walkouts over retirement benefits. The pilot's union demands that Lufthansa keep a transitional payment for those wanting to retire early. At present Lufthansa pilots can retire at 55 years of age, although most choose to do so at 59. Lufthansa, citing tough competition in the global market, wants to cut those payments and raise the retirement age to 61.
