OREANDA-NEWS. October 22, 2014. The interconnection will open new markets for producers and suppliers of power from Romania and will make it possible for Transelectrica, the national power transmission operator of Romania, to increase the power exports and make an additional profit, the Romanian mass media say.

According to the Romanian press, currently it is quite difficult to establish the power exchange between Moldova and Romania since power networks in former USSR republics use other frequencies than those used in the EU. However, establishing the direct connection eastward from the EU border is a long-standing goal of both: the EU and Russia, because theoretically, such connection ensures uninterrupted flow of power from Lisbon to Vladivostok.

Let’s remind that Romania’s Energy Minister Constantin Nita said that Transelectrica’s goal was to ensure in 2 to 3 years the power exports to Moldova in volumes enough to cover our country’s needs. According to him, the discussion on the feasibility report was under way. “We are considering an opportunity of building a back-to-back station at Vulcanesti. Thanks to the station we will be able to sell Moldova 500-600 MW.

But it will take at least a year to built it and the construction will require investment of EUR 60-65 million, - the Minister said. Last November, Transelectrica announced the completion of the construction of the Falciu-Gotesti high voltage line, which would connect the energy systems of Moldova and Romania. A total length of the line is 28 kilometres of which a 2.5-km-long segment runs through the territory of Romania.

The construction works in Romania started on August 20 and were completed in 3 months. The construction came to EUR 460,000 which was completely invested by Romania. The Falciu-Gotesti high-voltage line allows interconnecting power distribution networks of Moldova and Romania and ensuring security of the supply.
