OREANDA-NEWS. From July 2014 to the present day VNIIR specialists have delivered materials, fulfilled installation and commissioning of RPA equipment, emergency control systems for 500 kV overhead lines, connecting Zagorsk Pumped Storage Station with Trubino Substation (Moscow Oblast) and with Kostroma Thermal Power Station.

The works are fulfilled within reconditioning of the pumped storage station. Transfer of connections from existing 500 kV open switchgear at Zagorsk Pumped Storage Station to main 500 kV GIS at Zagorsk Pumped Storage Station-2 are also scheduled within the project.

VNIIR's equipment is intended to enhance overall reliability and also to reveal, prevent and stop fault operation of the power system.

The works are scheduled for 2015.

Zagorsk pumped-storage station, with 1200 megawatts turbine capacity and 1320 megawatts pump capacity, is a unique national pump-storage plant, capable both to produce energy and to store it. Therefore, Zagorsk pumped-storage station is used for smoothing load peaks in Moscow energy system.

Zagorsk Pumped Storage Station-2 is currently under construction near Zagorsk Pumped Storage Station in order to provide additional power sources to withstand maximum loads.

According to the National Grid Operator, the Central Region of Russia lacks over 3.0 million kilowatts of regulation power, of which 2.0 million kilowatts are required for Moscow and Moscow Oblast. Zagorsk Pumped Storage Station-2 is designed to solve this problem partly and also to prevent emergency situations in Moscow' and Moscow Oblast's power grids.
