OREANDA-NEWS. Crawford Gillies has been appointed as a non-Executive Director of SSE plc and will also become Senior Independent Director when he takes up his appointment on 1 August 2015, following the process set out in SSE’s Annual Report 2015.

He was originally an international management consultant and is now a non-Executive Director of Barclays PLC, and Standard Life plc and is Chairman of both Control Risks Group, and of Scottish Enterprise, the economic development agency for Scotland.  He will be leaving the board of MITIE Group plc in July, and is due to step down from Scottish Enterprise later this year.

Following Crawford’s appointment, the Board of SSE plc will comprise two Executive Directors and five non-Executive Directors plus the Chairman.

Richard Gillingwater, Deputy Chairman and Chairman Designate of SSE plc, said:
“As we said in our Annual Report, we have been focused on searching for a new non-Executive Director who could take on the role of Senior Independent Director, and I am very pleased this has resulted in Crawford agreeing to join the Board.  He has extensive business and management experience in the private sector and strong associations with the public sector as well.  I am sure that all of this will be of immense value to the Board and to SSE as a whole.”

Crawford Gillies said:
“Having gone to school in Perth it is particularly pleasing for me to have the opportunity to join the Board of SSE which, from its headquarters there, is now a leading energy provider across the UK and Ireland.  Energy is a critical resource, and this is a key time for the sector, and I am looking forward to contributing to SSE’s commitment to work for the benefit of customers and investors alike.”
