OREANDA-NEWS. In commenting on the rejection of the compromise proposal by the Greek Government institutions, Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas said that it is irresponsible with regard to the partners and a painful blow for the Greek people, in particular. At the same time, Rõivas hopes that the Greeks will make a considered decision because it will have a far-reaching impact on the future of both Europe and Greece.

According to Prime Minister Rõivas, all member states of the European Union and the euro area expected the Greek Government to understand the seriousness of the situation, the need to undertake reforms and the urgency of decision-making.
“This is why yesterday’s Eurogroup result is a disappointment for Estonia,” said Rõivas.

According to Rõivas, as a result of the reforms undertaken by previous Greek governments and the support from Europe, the Greek economy was already achieving indicators that allowed it to be optimistic about the sustainability of public finances, economic recovery and its future prospects for growth.

“In recent years, institutions of the European Union and the member states of the euro area, including Estonia, have showed significant understanding, support and solidarity with the Greek Government and the Greek people,” said Rõivas, who added that it is still possible for the Greek Government to reach an agreement regarding the conditions.

The Prime Minister said that the decision by the Greek Government and Parliament to hold a referendum was made suddenly and without consulting with partners. “We find the decision of the Greek Government parties to pursue a counter-campaign against complying with the programme conditions agreed in collaboration with the institutions to be irresponsible,” he noted and added that the decision by the Greek Government will have serious consequences for the Greek people and economy, in particular.

“Despite the previous developments, we hope that the Greek people can make an informed and responsible decision regarding the future of their country and its place in Europe in the referendum that is being brought about at very short notice,” said Rõivas. “These decisions have far-reaching impacts on the future of both Europe and Greece,” he added.

Rõivas confirmed that Estonia is fully committed and willing to do whatever is necessary to ensure the stability of the euro area together with other member states of the euro area.
