Asia-Pacific air passenger demand up in June

OREANDA-NEWS. Asia-Pacific airlines carried more international passengers in June amid robust leisure travel demand heading into the summer holiday season, although international cargo demand fell during the month.

The region's airlines carried 21.9mn international passengers in June, up by 5.9pc from a year earlier. But they took 0.5pc fewer cargoes in freight tonne kilometre terms, the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines' (AAPA) preliminary traffic figures showed.

The airlines carried a combined total of 135.6mn international passengers during January-June, a 9.3pc increase from the same period last year, said AAPA director-general Andrew Herdman.

"Overall growth in demand for air passenger travel is expected to remain positive, driven by competitive fares and continued growth in regional economies. The outlook for air cargo markets is more uncertain, with signs of a slowdown in global trade," he added.
