OREANDA-NEWS. Power management company Eaton today announced the VisoVac three-phase submersible fault interrupter designed to provide an advanced, versatile solution for underground and subsurface power and distribution switching applications. This new technology expands upon Eaton’s network protection solutions for enhanced safety and reliable power protection, control and communications in utility and other commercial and industrial applications.

Designed for subsurface, submersible or pad-mount medium voltage distribution applications requiring primary isolation of the associated transformer, the VisoVac fault interrupter delivers the highest interrupting ratings for submersible primary switches in the industry with a 25 kiloampere (kA) or 40 kA vacuum interrupting rating. The VisoVac interrupter can provide customers with a visible isolation and visible grounding and can be used for primary network isolation or distribution sectionalizing in single or multi-way configurations.

“There are more than 75,000 Eaton network protectors installed in underground networks worldwide and we are a longtime leader in developing new technology,” said Mark Faulkner, product line manager at Eaton. “We offer expansive solutions for new vault equipment, communications and automation for underground applications, as well as a wide range of training programs. Eaton’s VisoVac fault interrupter provides a new, innovative solution for utility, mining, oil and gas, data center, healthcare, renewable energy and other critical applications that require highly reliable power.”

The VisoVac interrupter incorporates Eaton’s industry leading vacuum interruption technology and avoids the use of oil or Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) technology, which contributes to the greenhouse effect. With Eaton’s vacuum interruption technology, the VisoVac interrupter is virtually maintenance free and requires little inspection during its long life of 10,000 mechanical operations. The vacuum interrupting mechanism can be remotely operated from a safe distance.

The enclosure is submersible and constructed of stainless steel for harsh vault and subsurface environments. The solution is also available with a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) enclosure using Strat-ZoneTM technology, which allows users to ground the enclosure to enable a safe touch exterior. The enclosures conform to the security requirements of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) C57.12.28 2005 standard.
