OREANDA-NEWS. As of 27 October, Asia’s three best performing indices for the month were the CSI 300, Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) and the Straits Times Index (STI). The STI has generated a month-to-date price gain of 9.4%, taking its year-to-date dividend-inclusive decline to 6.6%.

In the course of the October month-to-date, there were 28 gainers, one unchanged stock – Thai Beverage, and one decliner – SATS, which fell 0.5%.  SATS remained the strongest STI stock in the year thus far, generating a dividend-inclusive return of 27.8%.

The five most active STI stocks in the October month-to-date represented two key sectors, namely Industrials and Real Estate. These five stocks were Noble Group, Ascendas REIT, CapitaLand, Keppel Corp and Sembcorp Industries.

This activity was gauged by comparing the total traded value of stocks for the 1 October to 27 October period with the 27 October market capitalisation of the stocks. Hence, stocks with relatively higher traded values and lower market capitalisation will be considered more active. Longer term measures of turnover velocity capture changes in traded value in addition to changes in market capitalisation over time.

Noble Group was also the most volatile stock over the month-to-date period, and the strongest performer, gaining 28.9% in price in the month thus far. This followed on from a decline of 63.6% in price over the preceding nine months.

The next four most volatile stocks were Golden Agri-Resources, Wilmar International, Sembcorp Marine and Jardine Cycle & Carriage. Jardine Cycle & Carriage was the second-best performer for the month-to-date, with a 23.2% gain, but numbered amongst the least active stocks over the period. In the year-to-date, Jardine Cycle & Carriage has declined 17.1% on a dividend-inclusive basis, while the Jakarta Composite Index has declined 12.7% on a total return, Singapore Dollar basis. Jardine Cycle & Carriage has an interest in just over 50% in Astra International, a listed Indonesian conglomerate.

The 30 STI stocks, sorted by the most actives in the month-to-date, are detailed below.
