OREANDA-NEWS. The LitPol interconnector between Lithuania and Poland saw the first successful flows of power from Poland to Lithuania this week, after successful tests in the other direction over the last two weeks.

The LitPol link transmitted 150MW of power into Lithuania from Poland during a test on 1 December which was then sold into the Lithuania market. Tests during week 48 saw low capacity flows enter Poland and further tests during week 49 have successfully transmitted power in both directions.

"This is the first time that the electricity transmitted directly from Poland was sold in the Lithuanian market. Lithuanian electricity transmission system operator Litgrid sold the electricity transmitted from Poland during the interconnection test, thus marking the date from which a new source of supply became available in the market. LitPol Link opens new power markets to Lithuania, ensuring diversity and security of power supply", transmission system operator Litgrid's chief executive Daivis Virbickas said.

After a series of successful tests with flows in both directions over the course of the week the LitPol interconnector has demonstrated its readiness and is on schedule to begin commercial operations in December. Nordic exchange Nord Pool Spot and polish exchange Polpx are still on schedule for market coupling to occur on 8 December and Litgrid expects the interconnector to begin commercial operations in mid-December, although the exact date is yet to be confirmed.
