OREANDA-NEWS. IRU welcomes European Commission President Juncker’s comments highlighting the overall costs to the EU economy and society of re-imposed border controls in the Schengen area. IRU has received numerous reports that the impact on the road freight and passenger transport industry continues to be significant.

Michael Nielsen commented, “IRU has repeatedly raised the issue with Member States and at the highest levels of the European Commission. The time for talking is over. European decision makers and EU Member States must act to rapidly find solutions and do much more to actively support road passenger transport and road freight transport, the lifeblood of Europe’s economy, in order to overcome this crisis.”

IRU will continue to call on EU decision makers and EU Member States to minimise the impact on the free movement of goods and passenger transport and to provide the much needed adequate security to help the sector combat the issue of stowaways in connection with the current refugee and migrant crises.
