(NYSE: LUV) applauds transportation officials in Havana as the United States and Cuba culminated months of negotiation to restore scheduled flights between the mainland U.S. and the Caribbean nation. The carrier has engaged in discussions leading up to today's historic signing ceremony and will participate in a U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) frequency allocation proceeding unfolding over the next several weeks.

"During our planning, we've eagerly awaited a green light that would allow us to bring our world famous Hospitality and Southwest's low-fare value to the Cuba marketplace," said Bob Jordan, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer of Southwest Airlines. "Southwest has offered exemplary service to Customers for 45 years, serving more than 100 million Customers annually and we intend to bring our same game-changing formula to provide quality, affordable air travel to Cuba."

Additional details will be included in the carrier's application to the DOT as the agency determines frequency allocations. There have been no scheduled flights between the U.S. and Cuba since Southwest Airlines started service in 1971.
