OREANDA-NEWS. Today, a shipment of euro banknotes was brought from Vilnius International Airport to the vaults of the Bank of Lithuania. This was done in a secure manner, with a police escort.

‘This is the first replenishment in 2016 of the stock of euro banknotes, necessary to ensure smooth circulation of euro banknotes in Lithuania. The euro banknote shipment was delivered to Vilnius in accordance with the plan approved by the European Central Bank (ECB),’ said Deivis Stankevi?ius, Acting Director of the Cash Service of Bank of Lithuania.

Euro banknotes are printed at approximately 16 heavily secured European printing houses. From there, in coordination with the ECB, the banknotes are distributed to the euro area national central banks.

Under the direction of the ECB, the national central banks reallocate the banknotes, so that there is no lack of them in a country or that there are not too many of them. The Bank of Lithuania received a shipment of euro banknotes prior to the adoption of the currency of the European Union on 1 January 2015; last year, it replenished its stock several times.

In transporting banknotes, it is necessary to follow strict safety procedures and requirements, including flying the banknotes during daylight hours, limiting traffic while transporting them to the vaults and other security measures. All this is done with the help of the police. Due to security reasons, the cash delivery time, route, security and other details cannot be disclosed to the public ahead of time.
