OREANDA-NEWS. May 16, 2008. The President visited the field positions of the 54th missile division, equipped with the Topol-M mobile missile system.

The head of state learned about the tactical and technical characteristics of the Topol-M weapons system and its military capabilities. Dmitry Medvedev toured the mobile command post of the missile division and rode in a vehicle designed for combat control. From it he watched the on-duty shift directing military operations and examined the free-standing launching pad of the Topol M missile system. The President was also shown automotive and aviation equipment, particularly helicopters, often used in mining areas.

Then the head of state had lunch with the military division.

The 54th missile division is the first formation in  Strategic Missile Forces in charge of the new, refitted mobile land-based missile system Topol-M. In 2006 the first missile battalion armed with such weapons came into active service. In December of last year a second Topol-M missile battalion with three launchers was put into service  at the Teikovo Missile Complex.

The Topol-M Missile Complex represents the latest achievements of science and technology. The take-off weight of the missiles is 47 tonnes, their military payload is 1200 kilograms, and their flight range 10,000 kilometres. The nuclear safety of the system has been enhanced by the introduction of new technical measures and steps to improve fire protection for the plant and equipment.

Military personnel and equipment from the Teikovo Missile Compound were involved in the May 9th Victory Day parade on Red Square in Moscow.
